Why Tongue Imaging is Important

An essential part of my approach is the use of tongue imaging diagnostics—a system based on classical Chinese medicine, enhanced by modern photographic accuracy.

• This is how it works: The patient’s tongue is photographed under controlled lighting using a camera. The image of the tongue is shown on the screen, and I interpret shape, color, coating, moisture, and sublingual vein patterns—each of which corresponds to "organ systems", "blood flow", "fluid metabolism", "internal inflammation", and other information. Changes in the tongue reflect the "internal terrain" of the body—including lingering stagnation, qi depletion, fluid retention, or hidden heat—all of which affect the body’s ability to repair and regenerate.
• Why it matters in a rehab setting: Tongue imaging offers an internal diagnostic lens to complement orthopedic or post-surgical data. It guides the choice of herbal formulas based on constitutional imbalances rather than surface symptoms. It helps track systemic progress over time, especially in clients with fatigue, poor healing, or emotional overlays. It enhances acupuncture point selection by matching external injuries with internal patterns of dysfunction.
